Six Ways to Inspire Momentum in Your Small Town

I get asked all the time, what does it take to start reviving a small town? I’ve put a lot of thought into that. And I can honestly say there are two key ingredients I see over and over in rural communities that are thriving: vision and momentum. Yep, that seems to be the secret sauce. These towns have a common vision that the community rallies around, and with everyone working together, that in turn creates momentum.

So, what are some ways to create momentum? I’ve put together a list of six things that will help you build momentum, cast vision, and get people excited.

1. START AN INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT

Instagram is an incredible platform to help showcase your town. It’s highly visual and one look at your Instagram feed can inspire people to visit your town — or even come live there!

Pro tip: Create a feed that’s creative and visually appealing.

2. CREATE A WEBSITE

This is another great way to visually showcase your town, and also provide photos and links to everything your town has to offer. It’s something the locals will be proud of, and something that visitors almost always check out before coming.

Pro tip: Make sure there are people in the photos. People want to see activity happening in your town!

3. HOST A FARM DINNER

Farm-to-table dinners are a great way to bring communities together and support local farmers and businesses. These dinners also provide an incredible experience for the people of your small town.

Pro tip: Get our Farm Dinner Event Kit with everything you need to make your farm dinner a success!

4. INCORPORATE LIVE MUSIC

Live music and concerts infuse new life into local venues and public spaces and create vibrant community destinations.

Pro tip: Start with local bands. They will be excited to play a local gig and they also have local fans!

5. CREATE A TOWN EVENT OR CELEBRATION

This might be one of the best ways to create community pride and kick start momentum for your small town. From parades to street dances to tournaments, there are so many options to make this fun for everyone.

Pro tip: Put together fun and unique activities that will make your event stand out from those happening in other towns around you.

6. MURALS

Turning empty walls into huge public murals can have a lasting effect on a community. It’s a great way to bring the arts into your small town and show a sign of new life.

Pro tip: Engage local artists or the local art class to create designs.

Once you put these ideas into action, send me an email and tell me how it’s going! I love hearing from you and what you’re doing to inspire revival!
