I think small businesses — and small town small businesses — are really the backbone of a community. Businesses in small towns, not only are they willing to support their own financially, but they are also a place where you can stop in and they know you and they know your grandparents and they want to talk to you about your day. They’re invested in the community now and how the community’s going to be 10, 15, 20 years from now.

When I moved back here as a young adult to begin my adult years, a lot of the storefronts in downtown were empty. There were some that were occupied, which was great, but it was definitely an aging downtown. And now I look at it and we have restaurants, we have a boutique, we have a coffee shop, we have a flower shop that just opened. It’s definitely gone through its ups and downs, but we have a lot of entrepreneurs here, we have people who are willing to take risks, we have people who are dedicated and devoted to seeing things through, and I think that has allowed this town to withstand some of those struggles, and now I feel like we’re on the cusp of something big and I’m really excited for it.
