Episode 152 // Dakota Dawn Johnson of the Cowgirl Confessions Podcast

On today’s episode of the Rural Revival podcast we’re with Dakota Dawn Johnson, host of the Cowgirl Confessions podcast, in Mound City, Kansas (pop. 647). Dakota is a ranch wife, podcast host, and successful saleswoman and is sharing with us about her wonderfully wild and western life, as she likes to call it.

We’re talking about sales and sponsorships and why that doesn’t have to be as hard as you think, and Dakota’s giving us some great keys to making ourselves better in these areas by making sales skills life skills. She’s also talking about the cowgirl state of mind and inviting other people into this lifestyle, and what it looks like to find your calling and live that out.

Dakota truly is one of the most encouraging people I know and I love the way she champions women and shares their stories to inspire us. She talks about being a light, but we are so thankful for her bright light and positive outlook on our rural way of life!

And be sure to check out her podcast because if you love this podcast, I have a feeling you’re gonna love her podcast, too!

“I’m in a season of life that I prayed for, but it’s better than I prayed for.”

- Dakota Dawn Johnson

“The cowgirl state of mind means different things to different people, but I think ultimately at the end of the day it’s about understanding that when you’re going to fully step in and no matter what comes your way you’re going to take it on, you’re gonna do the best that you can, and realize that it’s not just about you, it’s about something much bigger and the way you handle stuff, it’s really setting the stage for the young people around you. The young cowgirls, the young cowboys, these strangers that know nothing about our way of life. And so being able to approach every situation with just that, I’m gonna figure it out, I’m gonna figure out how to do this, and I’m gonna do it with joy in my heart and a smile on my face, even when I don’t feel like smiling right now.”

- Dakota Dawn Johnson

“When it comes to sales, when you approach it from serving people and solving problems, with those two key things at the center of your focus, that’s what I always draw back to. Because sales is not always easy. The sale starts when someone tells you no. If you can just initially baseline, if you have a product or a service or an experience that you know is gonna bless somebody else, then remind yourself of that. Focus on how that’s gonna serve them and that’s gonna give you the confidence you need. You have to find something that you are confident it’s going to deliver.”

- Dakota Dawn Johnson

“There’s so much going on in the world today that being a light, it’s important to me. And that doesn’t mean that you ignore the dark stuff or when things are hard, but it’s a choice.”

- Dakota Dawn Johnson

“I think the future’s what you make it. There’s no shortage of things we can be concerned about. But I do feel like just the little bit of time I’ve gotten to spend working with some FFA students and things like that, it’s just like there is a bigger perspective of what is possible and what can be possible in rural America instead of having to go outside of it to go find a job or whatever. I can’t wait to see what that next generation brings up and I just want to do my best to raise good humans so they can be a contributing part of it, whatever that might look like.”

We’re challenging small towns to create opportunities and shift the mindset of our kids so they choose to stay in our rural communities instead of leave.
