Loyal Customers Support the Local Grocery

Highmore, South Dakota (pop. 653) is our featured rural community this week! We'll be sharing success stories throughout the week from local leaders and business owners who are making an impact here.

Today's guest blog post is from Jackie Mashek, owner of Mashek Food Center.

As of October 1, I have owned the store for 12 years now, after working here as a meat cutter and co-manager for 28 years. I grew up here and was so happy that the owner at the time gave me a chance at a job here. When the owner was looking to sell, I figured this is what I know, so why not just go ahead and buy it and do it for myself!

Since taking ownership of the store, I’ve gotten new coolers, freezers, put an unloading area in the back room, and also put in new cash registers and checkout stands. If you don’t put money back in the business, pretty soon you don’t have one, so investing in the business has been important to me.

We have full service carry out and we deliver three days a week to Highmore. We gather groceries for anybody if they call in and they can pick it up. Rotisserie chickens, pork loins, deli trays, fresh meat and produce, and cut to order meat.

I’m glad I’m able to provide the jobs I do and I’m very thankful for my loyal employees that are key to running this business.

In a time where it’s harder to have a grocery store in a small town, I have so many loyal customers both in Highmore and the surrounding towns that have helped us through the tougher times. It’s been an honor to serve this community.

I want to be here in Highmore. This is a really nice community and what they’ve done getting funds for the pool is amazing. It seems like whatever we set our minds to, we get it done. And everybody has each other’s back. I wouldn’t want to live anyplace else!
